Terms of Service

The rules for using the Site, the rights you have to our content, and the disclaimers we make. Effective May 10, 2026.

Plain-language summary: You can read everything on the Site for free. You cannot republish, repackage, or train AI systems on our content without permission. Our analysis is well-sourced but is not investment, legal, or engineering advice. We can update this site without notice. If you want to license or reuse a piece, email us.

1. Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or using negawatt.news (the “Site”) or subscribing to The Negawatt Weekly newsletter, you agree to these Terms of Service (“Terms”) and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Site or the newsletter.

2. The publisher

All content on the Site, including text, charts, code, images, and the design of the Site itself, is owned by Negawatt or licensed to Negawatt. We grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access and read the content for your own non-commercial use.

Without prior written permission from Negawatt, you may not:

Brief excerpts (a sentence or two, with attribution and a link) used in editorial commentary, criticism, or news reporting fall under fair use and do not require permission. When in doubt, email hello@negawatt.news and ask.

If you would like to license a piece, syndicate Negawatt content, or use a chart in a deck or report, we are usually open to it. Email hello@negawatt.news with what you have in mind. Standard educational and academic use is typically granted at no cost with attribution.

6. User submissions

If you submit a tip, pitch, correction, or other communication to Negawatt, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use the contents of that communication for editorial purposes, including publication. Tips submitted in confidence will not be attributed to you without your permission.

7. Sponsored content

Negawatt offers limited sponsorship of newsletter issues and long-form pieces, governed by the sponsorship policy and the ethics policy. Sponsored content is always clearly labeled. Sponsorship does not influence editorial selection or conclusions. Readers are responsible for evaluating sponsor claims for themselves.

You may subscribe to the newsletter by providing an email address. You may unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any newsletter email. We may discontinue, change, or pause the newsletter at our discretion.

You agree not to use the Site or the newsletter to: violate any law; infringe the intellectual property of Negawatt or any third party; attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Site or its underlying systems; transmit malware or harmful code; interfere with the operation of the Site for other readers; or harass, threaten, or impersonate any person, including the editor.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Negawatt and its editor will not be liable to you for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of the Site or the newsletter, including without limitation any errors or omissions in any content, any loss or damage incurred as a result of any use of any content, or any decision made or action taken in reliance on any content. Negawatt’s total aggregate liability to you under these Terms will not exceed one hundred US dollars (US $100).

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Negawatt and its editor from any claim, demand, loss, or damage, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the Site, or your infringement of any third-party right.

We may update these Terms as the publication evolves. The effective date at the top of the page will reflect the most recent update. Continued use of the Site after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
