1. Who we are
Negawatt (the “Site”) is operated by Negawatt Media, a publication entity headquartered in the United States. References below to “we,” “us,” or “Negawatt” refer to Negawatt Media. The Site is reachable at negawatt.news. Contact for privacy matters: privacy@negawatt.news.
2. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Email address. Voluntarily provided when you subscribe to The Negawatt Weekly newsletter or contact us by email.
- Newsletter engagement data. When you receive the newsletter, our newsletter platform (Beehiiv) records whether the email was opened and which links were clicked. This is industry-standard newsletter analytics.
- Site usage data. Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) logs aggregate, non-identifying request data (IP address, country, browser type) for security and performance. Where we use a privacy-respecting analytics provider, we record aggregate page views and referrers without personal identifiers.
- Inquiry and tip information. If you email us with a tip, sponsorship inquiry, or other communication, we retain the email and its contents for editorial and business records.
We do not collect: payment information (we do not process payments at this time), behavioral advertising profiles, biometric data, location data beyond country-level, or information from minors under 13.
3. How we use information
We use the information described above only for the following purposes:
- To send you newsletter issues you have subscribed to
- To respond to your inquiries
- To improve our writing and editorial decisions, based on aggregate engagement
- To maintain the security and performance of the Site
- To comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your information. We do not share your email address with sponsors, advertisers, or any third party for their marketing purposes.
4. Third-party services we use
The Site relies on a small number of third-party providers, each of which has its own privacy policy:
- Cloudflare (hosting and DNS): see cloudflare.com/privacypolicy
- Beehiiv (newsletter platform): see beehiiv.com/privacy
- Google Fonts (typography delivery): served from fonts.googleapis.com; no cookies are set, but Google may log a request
If we add additional providers (for example, a privacy-respecting analytics tool, or a payment processor for paid subscriptions), we will update this policy and link to their privacy practices.
5. Cookies and tracking
The Site itself does not set first-party cookies. Cloudflare may set a transient security cookie (cf_clearance) for bot protection. The newsletter platform may set cookies on its own subscription pages, governed by its policy. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or behavioral retargeting pixels.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), or similar state laws (Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, and others). These rights typically include:
- The right to access the personal information we hold about you
- The right to request correction of inaccurate information
- The right to request deletion of your information
- The right to unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time
- The right to opt out of any sale or sharing of personal information (we do not sell or share)
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@negawatt.news. We will respond within 30 days. To unsubscribe from the newsletter without contacting us, click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any newsletter email.
7. Data retention
We retain newsletter subscriber data for as long as you remain subscribed, plus 90 days after unsubscribe for record-keeping. Inquiry emails are retained for as long as the relationship is active. Aggregate, non-identifying analytics are retained on a rolling 24-month basis.
8. Security
The Site is served over HTTPS. Subscriber data is held by Beehiiv under their security practices. We do not store sensitive personal information ourselves. We will notify affected readers without undue delay in the event of a confirmed data breach involving personal information.
9. Children
Negawatt is intended for an adult professional audience. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact privacy@negawatt.news and we will delete it.
10. International users
The Site is hosted in the United States. By using the Site, readers outside the US consent to the transfer of their information to the US for processing under this policy.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the publication evolves. The effective date at the top of the page will reflect the most recent update. For material changes, we will notify newsletter subscribers by email.
